Head of the Department - Andriy Sibirny, Ph.D., Dr. Sci., Professor, Member of NAS of Ukraine.

 

The Department was established in 1988 on the base of the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics which was found in 1985, and since that time it is headed by Andriy Sibirny, Dr.Biol.Sci., Professor, Member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He was awarded with O. Palladin prize of NAS of Ukraine in the field of biochemistry (2004) and I. Metchnikov prize of NAS of Ukraine in the field of microbiology (2014). He is the laureate of State award for the achievements in science and technology (2012). A. Sibirny is also honored worker of Ukraine in science and technology (2008). A. Sibirny is the author of more than 220 full-length scientific articles including three monographs and near 150 papers in peer-reviewed International scientific journals, 28 Patent Applications, 100 abstracts of oral and poster communications of conferences, including 40 plenary lectures on domestic and International scientific meetings.

The main research topics:

 

  • Mechanisms of degradation of peroxisomal and cytosolic proteins in yeasts.

  • Regulation of flavinogenesis in nonconventional yeasts. Cloning of structural and regulatory genes involved in biosynthesis of riboflavin and its derivatives (flavin coenzymes, roseoflavin) and its.

  • Role of glutathione (GSH) in stress response of methylotrophic yeast cells: cloning of structural and regulatory genes, construction of GSH-overproducing strains, bioaccumulation of heavy metals.

  • Production of biofuel ethanol by fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates by non-conventional yeasts.

  • Construction of microbial strains capable to produce isobutanol (yeasts) and hydrogen (bacteria).

  • Biotechnological production of proteins important for medicine and diagnostics.

  • Development of new combinatorial approaches for cancer treatment.
