Head of the Department – ​​Andriy Andriyovych SIBIRNY, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

 

The department was founded in 1988 on the basis of the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics, which was established in 1985 and headed by Andriy Andriyovych Sibirny. He is a laureate of the O. Palladin Prize of the NAS of Ukraine in the field of biochemistry (2004) and the I. Mechnikov Prize of the NAS of Ukraine in the field of microbiology (2014). He also received the honorary title of "Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine" (2008), is a foreign member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (2012).

 

A. Sibirny is the author of more than 300 scientific articles, including 34 chapters in monographs, more than 40 patents, several hundred abstracts of oral and poster presentations, including more than 40 plenary lectures, at domestic and international conferences. His Hirsch index is 38 (Scopus), the total impact factor of publications (Scopus) is over 300, the total number of citations is over 15000 (Scopus). Co-author of the monograph "Microbial synthesis of flavinins" ("Naukova dumka", 2006). Chief Editor of monographs: "Living organisms and bioanalytical approaches for detoxication and monitoring of toxic compounds" (University of Rzeszow, 2015); "Biotechnology of yeasts and filamentous fungi" (Springer, 2017); "Non-Conventiona Yeasts: from Basic Research to Application" (Springer Nature, 2019); "Flavins and Flavoproteins" (Springer Nature, 2021); "Biotechnology of Yeasts and Filamentous Fungi. Grand Challenges in Biology and Biotechnology" (Springer, 2025).

 

Academician A.A. Sibirny was the Chairman (2008-2012), and is currently a member of the International Commission on Yeasts of the International Association of Microbiological Societies, a member of the International Committee on Molecular Biology and Genetics of Yeasts, a delegate to the International Federation of Cell Biology (IFCB), was the Director of FEMS for Microbiological Education and Promotion of Microbiological Achievements (2018-2024).

The main areas of scientific research in the department:

 

  1. Mechanisms of degradation of peroxisomal and cytosolic proteins in yeasts.

  2. Regulation of flavinogenesis in non-conventional yeast. Cloning of structural and regulatory genes involved in biosynthesis of riboflavin and its derivatives (flavin coenzymes and antibiotics).

  3. Production of biofuel ethanol by fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates by non-conventional yeasts.

  4. Identification of mechanisms of functioning genes and their products involved in the metabolism and alcoholic fermentation of pentose sugars (xylose, L-arabinose) in thermotolerant methylotrophic yeast.

  5. Development of a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 based on the expression of S protein fragments in yeast and the study of the immune response in laboratory animals.
